How To Make Sure You Never Enter Into Business With A Bad Actor

You’ve most likely heard just about everything there is to hear about Elizabeth Holmes and how she was sentenced to 11 years in prison for defrauding investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars at Theranos.

But you may still be thinking that such a major con could never happen to you.

Well the truth is, most criminals and con artists like Holmes are exceptionally good at covering up their crimes and criminal past.  And simply conducting a background check won’t cut it.

Failure to conduct deep executive due diligence can put your company at risk for breaches of contract, fraud, past lawsuits or more.  It doesn’t matter how ethically and above board you run your company.  If you end up associating yourself with the wrong bad actors, you put yourself in grave danger of a wide variety of regulatory and economic risks.

You don’t want to be taken in by someone with a hidden or undisclosed criminal history that you could have found.  Most con artists will assume that you will never properly check…because most companies never do.

You also have to keep your eye out for situations in which someone may not be doing something technically illegal, but their actions are certainly breaching company or cultural ethics and putting the reputation of your business at risk.

Sea World may not have been breaking any laws when they came under fire from animal rights activists for their treatment of orcas in 2010, but the cost to the company in lost revenue and damaged reputation was enormous.

Cultural risks like these won’t necessarily pop out at you on the latest balance sheets.  Nor will the 10% to 20% of CEOS and senior executives who have adverse hidden or undisclosed information in their backgrounds.

Infortal’s investigative analysis goes beyond looking at someone’s employment history, credit history, and criminal background.  Our deep dive due diligence includes searching public records, global watch lists, domestic US and overseas criminal (where available) and civil court records, corporate board conflicts, financial pressures, behavioral concerns, and more.

You’ll get a full picture that includes any criminal history, court issues, concerning online activity, conflicts of interest, and other criminal risks a company or individual could bring to your business.
